Packs of Burvorg

A section dedicated to Wolves of Burvorg and elsewhere : their life, their history, their behavior or their political system, everything about Wolves !

- Wolf behavior

Wolves are before anything else completely normal human beings, just possessing an instinct of pack and an approach of life in any event which bring them their name.

The wolf people has its roots in the Valley of the Shadows and the swamps of the western lands. These parts of the country, hostile to any civilized life, and their barbaric customs made Wolves what we know of them today : dirty, boorish, rough and quietly ironic, very wild and aggressive people, with an innate tendency for war and conquests, as well as for the occasional spinelessness, cruelty and savagery.
To them, they do not exist "in a evident way" notions of pacts, alliances or cultural exchanges : they live to die in battle or enslave and massacre their enemies.
Of course, it remains a general tendency, and Wolves can also show themselves diplomats, very cunning and peaceful, as proven by some of their alliances with other civilisation or creatures, but it establishes in no way a majority base of thought for them, and it is always better to keep a sword near you when you have to deal with Wolves.

Beyond that, Wolves are among very good smiths, although their art is of a lower quality than elvish or goblyn standards. Wolves can however boast of being the most brilliant siege engineers and castle builders there are. Their fortresses have nothing to envy to daronoan or goblyn stronghold, with whom they play tied, and their siege machines are even very often superior to those of talented elf and goblyn siege masters !
Their War Lords are also brave, intelligent and very good strategists, strong of an experience arisen from whole generations of belligerent fighters and bloody victories.
To think Wolves are stupids would be a crucial error : common wolf people ARE stupid and boorish, certainly, but their elites are wild and hypocritically intelligent, if not even wise in some way.

Politically, Wolves do not possess a incontested leader or hierarchy, spending their time fighting between them, small kingdoms against small kingdoms. What holds leader's place are Dominants, War Lords having slice themselves by weapons and political dexterity an empire among their Wolves peers. Wolves follow the law of the strongest, and accept easily the dominion of a single leader, it's just that pretenders are always numerous and pugnacious, and that no Dominant know how to unite or enslave all the others. If it had to be the case, Wolves would become a very serious threat for other big civilisations, all their efforts and their warmongering spirit united under a single bloodthirsty and cruel banner.

Wolves, even if numerous enough to rise whole kingdoms, are nevertheless very minor people of Saïhan, in front of the inconceivable unlimitedness of daronoan and goblyn lands. They were a long time ago annexed by Daronoans, which succeeded in some terrible wars to make Wolves kneeled before them. Wolves, certainly rough but intelligent enough not to persist in a lost cause, agreed to become an elvish Dominion. They lent them soldiers, craft secrets and support since then, having in fact not the slightest choice if they want to survive and not being crushed to death under daronoan power.
Nevertheless, since the War of Vengeance started by goblyns, Daronoans have been subjected to a hard test, and had to engage colossal strengths in the defense of their own kingdom. As titanic as are strengths, they are not uncountable nor omnipresent, and it didn't take a long time to Wolves to understand that they had a new card to play in this conflict.
They waited patiently for the good moment, as a predator watching for his prey, and then betray Daronoans ! The Golden Crown was never fooled, but could simply not do anything to contain Goblyns by North and Wolves by West, and had to choose...
And so Wolves took back weapons against Daronoans, and against Goblyns at the same time, well determined to gain themselves a plethora of kingdoms by a massive conquest without concessions in all the already ravaged and pale lands.

- Wolves women

The "women" of the wolf people are a particularly interesting subject, although jealously preserved out of sight and discussions of Wolves.
They are, indeed, widely less numerous than Wolves males, within a rate of one woman for fifty men, and more often one woman for a hundred men.
Beyond this strangeness, they possess an impressive fertility and indeed beyond all usual human standards, giving birth without fallout to twelve to fifteen babies several times a year if they wish it, what only reinforce the "clanic" particularity of Wolves packs.

Besides this singular fact, the physical appearance of the Wolves women is also notable. Wolves women are indeed very ugly, according to collectively accepted standards. They are, first thing, of an impressive stature, often superior to that of Daronoans, who are nevertheless all bigger and stronger than the Wolves common, what marks a big constrast when a Wolf man and woman stand side by side. Contrary to Daronoans, on the other hand, they are also very squat, thick, and anyone would qualify them as "obese women".
Their total absence of affectation and grace often make them gain the nickname of "she-bears" or of "wild boars", moreover.
Their faces maintain their disgrace: a square chin, a severe face covered with wrinkles, hunchbacked and wide nose, slightly prominent orbits, distended lips and marked in a perpetual grin of wickedness, they have everything of a haunting matriarchal nightmare.

What influences finally largely social stakes in Wolves society : Wolves women hold housewives' role, taking care of all the domestic business of society, but only because they are want it. Of a little enviable character, and a staggering irascibility of firmness and aggressiveness, they dominate widely the males of their people, who wish certainly in secret not to see Dominants dethroned by these forces of Nature. Why they do not take the slightest political power in Wolves society remain an enigma, that no male are in a hurry to resolve, obviously.

After that, it's no surprise to discover that the reproduction among Wolves work in one-way : Wolves women choose their partners, at any time they want, and whatever the rank, the importance or the stature of the partner are. The chosen "partner" may resist and fight if he wants, but Wolves women leave no choice, no hope and no excuse to their terrible acts, and no Wolf has ever managed to escape, even by raw strength, the good will of a Wolf woman.
This subject really makes no wolf laugh, even if they sometimes mock the wounded pride of "chosen partners".
A sarcastic popular proverb says moreover with a certain correctness that " if Wolves put so much spirit in war, it's to escape the grasp of their women". Rather die in the fight, soaking in its own blood, that to be caught by a Wolf woman wanting to " renew the lifeblood of the pack" !

They are a rare and underestimated element of the Wolf nation, but they occupy nevertheless a leading place there, although discreet...

- Vorgeans

It sometimes happens that the human side of Wolves seem to have to fade in front of certain mystic calls anchored in the depths of their souls...
Gegarious and clan instincts of Wolves re-appear, sometimes, under darkest and disturbing forms.
When the war resounds in their hearts and when enemies are made legions, it happens that supernatural beings appear among Wolves, transcending their mortal nature to become more than human beings. It can happen to the last one of muddies as to the biggest Dominant, without following a precise or known rule, except the warrior nobility and the pugnacity of the chosen one.

Under the blow of an ancestral pressure, and with an atricious pain and a sudden pleasure at the same time, the transformation operates in the chosen one, and make of him a being of legend among his peers : a Vorgean.
The Wolf stops then being subjected to the laws of men and to the logic of things, to become Vorgean. Keeping a rather usual appearance for not warned eyes, Vorgean finds in fact his fangs growing, as his pilosity and muscular structure, multipliyng his physical abilities. He becomes of an incredible flexibility, infatiguable, day-blind, in with sharpened sense of smell as a real wild dog, and a bearer of diffuse but devastating powers...
It becomes the banner of the Pack spirit, the living symbol of Wolf nation, the Banner of Souls, the War Bringer !

Vorgean remains similar to what he was, for most part. It's other Wolves, that change, then. This unexplained phenomenon of the deep nature of Wolves does not show itself on the scale of an invidividual, but in that of groups, whole cities ! Under the silent call of a Vorgean, and following his tracks into the very heart of battles, Wolves become more aggressive, more cunning, and more welded and disciplined than they never were before. In the trail of a Vorgean, Wolves do not fight any more between them, do not move back any more, and become little by little, irresistibly, particles of an immense and totally coordinated entity, in a social harmony of large scale.
Vorgeans are the Pack, the Pack is Vorgeans. Where they pass, the chaos and the individual stop existing, to make way to a big war machinery, working by instinct, each one finding at once and in a innate way his place among others...

Their enemies then do not face any more isolated men, subjected to their fears, their interests, capable of exploiting their strengths, and trying to hide their weaknesses. No, they face then a gigantic, plain spirit, endowed with thousands burning glances with a rough appetite for Death and dominion. Bravest War Lords have already testified of the dismay that they felt, seeing whole armies of Wolves walking toward them like one man, an unwavering determination in the heart, and making weigh their abominable thirst of destruction as a weapon on the spirit of their opponents.
They are not ashamed there to have called for retreat, in front of an army led by Vorgeans, it's only the purest and simpliest survival reflex of a prey at the sight of a predator...

Vorgeans breathe through the heart and the body of Wolves, in a visceral, invisible, invincible way. They are only human, but they are much more than that : they are Big Banners of Destruction of the Wolf nation !

- Living legends

Wolves are a minor civilisation of Saïhan, compared with the extent of elvish and goblyn kingdoms, but their roots are millenniums.
Hidden in the western swamps, their wild civilization was for a long time out of sight and attentions of most conquering opponents.
In mangrove swamps and pools of mud, where life is even more murderous than everywhere else and predators more hostile and more uncountable, outstanding beings sometimes appeared, wilder and more powerful still than the environment which saw them appear.
A war so bloody always has its heroes, and people so ancient, their legends...

Here's some of those mythic characters among all :

Garlôn

Garlôn is an enigma. All scouts and isolated trackers knew a "Garlôn", in their life. Always a martial virtuoso, of uncountable talents in tracking. The problem is that versions contradict themselves, on his subject, and tales would seem to go back up in time on millenniums of wolves stories ! Garlôn would be the first one to have investigated the Silence and to have returned sane of mind, the first one to have to find a Hole of Mists, and the only one to know all their locations, and so continue the list. He saw everything, and was everywhere. Some people think that he would be in fact a Wolf God, whose appearances would be in fact signs of good fortune...
Ogrûssien

In an era where the capture of Demons was still only a sport, Ogrûssien was the first one to go down in devilish kingdoms at the head of an army. He led a colossal and bloody war there, plunging Wolves into an age of conquering madness, which ended in the massive slavery of Devils, such as we know it now. It is by Ogrûssien that Demons learnt to know terror in their heart, and it is his furious face they are afraid to see in the rare Channels he left opened at the end of his campaign. The Bloodthirsty, the Butcher, Kneeler of Dreadâns, him, Ogrussien the Enslaver...
Father Canis

Evinius, more known under the name of Father Canis, is one of the oldest wolf who is. His legendary senility has equal only his ferocity, and he is openly laughed at as well as secretly feared. It is told that even the Old Death, who comes to take shameful old men not having known how to die on battlefields, does not dare to approach him any more, since he bit her more profoundly than the Gods themselves could ! Immortal or not, he is one among few to remember a time when Wolves did not know the yoke of Daronoans. A living symbol off the sensational pugnacity of past Wolves, which inspire in all tomorrow' dreams of conquests...
Harulgund

Harulgund is a colossal half-elf, and one of the greatest Wolf Warlord of our era. However, the ceaseless intrigues of Burvorg urged him to build his kingdom much more in the South of swamps, near the Marginal of Glass, this inner sea lining Daronoans mounts and the Sinister Country. From there, he was the first one to take advantage of the Wolf rebellion against crimson elves, rising to assault of their most ancient and best protected borders, with a ferocity and an strong experience. Insensible to weather, despair and pity, Harulgund is a monster of merciless hate, as dreaded as renowned...
