Siege

Sections :

- Blocking/Permissions

A siege is a special category of combat, which do not work like standard battle, and introduce a strategic dimension coming along with this kind of fight : the possibility or not to attack.
Indeed, for each type of troops, you will have to check if it can attack or not, and if defenses will block it or not.
It works more simply than you can imagine. If you want to attack, you must meet two conditions :
- you must be able to attack with this type of troop. Sometimes it's obviously possible (example : siege unit if you are attacker, range unit if you are defender), and other times you will have to possess some specific siege units, usually called "access units" (example : attacker's infantry needs siege ladders, defender's cavalery needs drawbridge)
- opponent must not have a defense or a siege unit that can block this unit (example : fields pits prevent attackers from being charged by defender's cavalry)
If you can attack, and enemy can't block you, the attack happen normally (attack, defense, damage roll, nemesis, etc... see Combat). If not, nothing happens.
So you must know how to analyze enemy's defenses, and be equipped and full of adequat siege machines and units.
Note : if you can't attack with a unit, in siege, this symbol will appears, right to it : " (X) "
Note 2 : allies access units and defenses share their effects with you. Meaning, for example, your infantry can attack if an ally possess siege ladders !
Note 3 : numbers of defenses or access units are not important. Even if it's not realistic, one ladder is enough for any amount of infantry to attack. (The game works perfectly with that system, and happens to be very well balanced that way. If you think realism is better, too bad, make your own experience and game, you will understand the strenght, diversity and quality of this system, at the end ! ^^)

- Summary table

Whatever your situation is, don't hesitate to refer to this table that will show you quickly how you can work your way around your siege problems ^^
Note : this table will always be accessible from the battle menu, in case of sieges.

- Garrisons

Garrisons of besieged cities are the troops that can be recruit in it, same thing.
An attacked city can be entered in to recruit and re-supply, so the troop in it are then shown in battle, and you must defeat all enemy armies to free the castle and be able once again to enter it !

Of course, garrisons troops don't attack, as they were just produced troops waiting for someone to recruit them, be they can counter-attack as anyone, and make a castle stronger, just by being there, in the way of enemy's objectives.
Another advantage is, as cities produce each hour what they can, they also (in a small way, but still) always refill their own garrisons !
Meaning attackers have to be organized to take a big fortress, even with no defenders around !
